Egypt 3 Slot Canyon

There are lots of slot canyons in this area, so they have some pretty colourful names. Egypt 3 is one of the big ones. We park in some ordinary looking desert, walk down a dusty gully (guided as always by Andrew's GPS)...

When whammo, the ground drops away. At least a hundred meters straight down.

Looking for a way in, we run into another canyon guy.

We eventually make our way down...

... and the claustrophobic fun begins.

But it doesn't last long. We come to a flooded spot. It is deep and too wide to stem across, so it is a dead end. Too bad because we've done maybe 5% of the length of the slot canyon.

I'm having a tough time getting back out of the part where the water is.

Once out, I decide to buck the trend and go up the other side of the canyon. If you enlarge the picture you can see the others, quite clearly in the first picture then shrinking to near invisibility by the fourth one. This place is huge.

I'm standing around the head end of the canyon, and I'm almost certain the road and the vehicles are straight up the dry wash... but I didn't take a walkie talkie, and I don't have a map, compass or GPS. First rule of the desert: Thou shalt not get lost. Second rule of the desert: Everything looks the same. So I play it safe and walk down the other side of the canyon, to try to meet the others before they get upset about my absence. They've had a much longer way out.
