When a Nerd 21st Century Man goes on Vacation
Written July 12 2003
Let's see, swimsuit, sunblock, sunglasses...
When you're a technology obsessed nerd, it's not quite so simple. For the
vacation I'm about to embark on,
here are all the electronic bits that are also coming along
for the ride (you can just imagine the fun at the airport when you have most
of this stuff in your carry-on luggage, these days).
Approximately top left to bottom right, we have
- Laptop computer - for storing digital camera pictures, GPS traces, and to use with GPS mapping software
- Power supply and line cord for the laptop
- Power inverter, to use line powered gadgets in the car (Portawatz 150)
- Cigarette lighter plug expander
- Compact Flash adapter, for reading digital camera memory cards
- Case for GPS receiver (a cellphone case)
- Case for digital camera
- Digital camera (Canon S100)
- Spare batteries for headlamp
- LED Headlamp (Petzl Tikka)
- Spare batteries for GPS receiver
- GPS receiver (Garmin eTrex Summit)
- Cigarette lighter extension cord
- AC extension cord (for use with power inverter)
- AC multi-plug
- Spare digital camera batteries
- Charging base for FRS radios
- Belt clips for FRS radios
- FRS radios (Motorola T5725)
- Charger for digital camera batteries
- Car power / data cable for GPS (homemade out of a modified Sony DiscMan car power adapter,
cable from a mouse, and one of these plugs)
Ah, the modern convenience of it all.
Now back to the usual stuff to pack.
