7th Edition Unix

The ancestor of all modern Unixes. After this version it split into the BSD and AT&T variants. Modern Unixes have all the good features from both, and are still mostly backwards-compatible with the 7th Edition.

Want to know more? You should. The manuals that came with the 7th Edition were beautiful, both in appearance and in the quality of the writing. You can find them in PDF format at http://cm.bell-labs.com/7thEdMan/bswv7.html.

Wondering what those weirdo Linux nuts love so much? Thinking that Bill Gates and his cronies invented modern operating systems? You really should read the paper The Unix Timesharing System by Ritchie and Thompson in 1974. It's in the Volume 2A PDF file.

Thanks to modern technology, you can even play with the real thing.
