First stop when we see Lake Mead
Down to the Hoover Dam, which we have to cross to get into Arizona
Now we are out in the wide open Arizona desert. We stop at appealingly named town of Chloride, which is in the hills visible to the left.
Given the look of the place I don't expect much. But the lady at the visitor center / general store / museum is very friendly and talkative, as are the two guys just sitting on chairs and eating pie. We talk about boom times (mining boom theirs, dot-com boom ours). We privately wonder what this place (whose mine has long ago shut down) does to sustain itself. Later we discover it: Almost every place is an antique dealer, junk shop, artisan's studio of some sort. Even so, the place doesn't look as though a lot of tourists stop here.
Anyway, don't just take my word for it, these days everybody is on the web.
Continuing southward, we eventually pass through and get groceries and gas in Kingman. We proceed further south on highway 93 toward our first hike destination, near Wickieup. Shortly before there, we find a good campground.
Not a very "productive" day, but the first day never is, after the jetlag and short night coming from Ottawa.
